Commercial Auto Insurance: Personal Auto Insurance’s Often Confused Twin

What’s the difference between commercial auto insurance and personal auto insurance? I’ll give you a hint, it doesn’t have to do with the name you register it under. But, plenty of people will make that mistake and find themselves in trouble because they now lack the proper coverage. Making sure you are properly covered is one our specialties and we’ll come up with an auto insurance plan that will work best for you and your business. That’s why we’ve provided a breakdown of both personal auto insurance and commercial auto insurance below so that you no longer have to worry about whether or not you have the proper plan.

What is personal auto insurance?

It’s exactly what it sounds like. Personal auto insurance packages are designed to cover the operation of your own vehicle (and can also cover your liability when driving a car you do not own). Your own vehicle is used for your own use (i.e. driving to and from work, on road trips, to the grocery store, etc.) We highly recommend that you have some kind of personal auto insurance if you plan on driving. If you don’t have it and get into an accident with a friend’s car you could find yourself paying quite a bit in damages.

What is commercial auto insurance?

Commercial auto insurance is designed to cover both vehicles and people who drive for a living. The insurance package covers everyone from the pizza delivery guy to the tech support van your IT company may own and protects you and your business from financial responsibility in the aftermath of an auto accident. Since commercial auto insurance covers such a wide range of businesses and business needs we strongly suggest that you at least consult an insurance professional before you purchase an insurance package.

Other Than Collision Coverage

Are you familiar with Other Than Collision Coverage as an option for your contracting business? This is a policy that covers your automobiles in the event that they’re damaged from something other than a collision. This is especially useful for contractors, who generally have a number of commercial vehicles that travel to a variety of different job sites and other potentially dangerous areas.

Some of the types of damage covered by Other Than Collision Coverage policies include damage as a result of:

  • Missiles of fallen objects
  • Fire
  • Theft
  • Larceny
  • Explosions
  • Earthquakes
  • Windstorms
  • Hail
  • Water
  • Flood
  • Malicious mischief
  • Vandalism
  • Riot
  • Civil commotion
  • Contact with birds or animals
  • Glass breakage

Generally speaking, this list is not an exhaustive list of provisions covered by Other Than Collision Coverage policies. Most insurers consider the aforementioned list to be items that are simply not covered by collision coverage. However, if someone experiences damage to their vehicle that is not on this list, it’s up to the adjuster for the claim to determine if the damage should be covered under the Other Than Collision Coverage policy. An example of such an instance is if a vehicle’s engine is ruined due to the vehicle overheating, it could be argued that the damage should be covered by an Other Than Collision Coverage policy, but since it’s not on the generally provided list, it’s not guaranteed. Oftentimes a claim of that nature would be denied, because Other Than Collision Coverage policies have exclusions for damage as a result of mechanical or electrical breakdown.

Other instances that are generally covered by these kinds of policies include:

  • If someone is spray-painting something near your car, and it is damaged by residual paint carried by the wind
  • Your parked car is damaged after falling into a roadbed (sinkhole effect)
  • Debris as a result of a terrorist attack damages your vehicle (which would likely also be covered under the explosion or fallen objects provision)
  • An animal dies inside a vehicle, leaving a horrendous odor

The aforementioned lists, as explained earlier, are not necessarily exhaustive, but Other Than Collision Coverage policies are often considered fairly subjective.
